What the heck are those?
So I planted some perennials in some pots outside last year. They died. Apparently when you pot a perennial, most of which have complex root systems, you have to replenish what it’s taken from the soil. You have to fertilize it or the dirt will be void of anything good & the plant will die. Think of the good bacteria in your stomach, the live cultures – as the plant. You can ingest live cultures (probiotics) & you can in essence, plant good bacteria in your stomach. However, you have to fertilize it. Prebiotics are the nourishment that, that bacteria needs. I dumbed that down pretty far, I don’t know if it even made sense. Regardless, probiotics are the good bacteria that you want in your gut & prebiotics help that good bacteria to thrive.
“Probiotics are living microorganisms that scientific research has shown to benefit human health. In some cases they are similar to, or the same as, the microbes already found in a healthy digestive tract. These microorganisms in our digestive tract are collectively called our microbiome. The microbiome is tied to digestion, the immune system, mood balance, essential nutrient creation, and plays a role in allergic reactions as well as viral, bacterial, fungal and yeast infections.
The microbiome can be thrown out of balance through stress, food, alcohol, exercise, medications and antibiotics. That’s why taking a daily probiotic is so important to maintaining balance in the microbiome.” – Ora Organics
Why would you ingest that let alone buy it?
There are plenty of forms in which to take prebiotics & probiotics – pill, powder, direct from food. How (or why) you do it is a personal choice. For me, I believe in the direct link between your gut and your mood. Having your gut flora in a funk can cause all sorts of problems. Did you know that your gut is the 2nd largest nervous system that produces the majority of the body’s Serotonin (happy juice)? I didn’t know that until I read the Happy Gut. (<< Good read, but that 30-day reset is not for everyone) Also, when I’m taking care of my gut, which I do in various ways – my quality of life improves ten fold. So, I buy prebiotics & probiotics to supplement my fermented foods & daily booch!
How exactly do you use them?
I buy my prebiotics combined with probiotics in pill form. Sometimes I open the capsule and tip it into my iced coffee (hot drinks can kill the bacteria strands). Sometimes I pop the capsule in my mouth with a giant gulp of booch. Sometimes I forget to take it. However, it is always plant based, USDA organic, non-GMO & never swallowed on an empty stomach. Please, just make sure you aren’t putting any fillers, sweeteners or artificial ingredients into your body while you’re trying to do good – read your labels. And for gosh sake, no preservatives. None. Don’t. Do. It.
Okay, how much are they?
I researched different brands and varieties of prebiotics & probiotics for over a year before I pretty much gave up. Then I saw Ora Organics on Shark Tank & it was game over. I reached out to them as soon as I did a little more background research & so far this is the only capsule I take on a daily basis.
“Ora’s Probiotic Blend contains clinically documented and acid resistant strains to give a comprehensive mix of probiotic species for optimal digestive health, immune function, mood balance, hair & skin health, and pathogen fighting support (candida, yeast, bacterial and viral)*”
Not to mention it checks all of the boxes I listed out above. It’s $39.99 for the powder or $34.99 for pills. You can subscribe & save money & you can use the code ‘healthfulltime’ for 10% off. There are other options available, but make sure you’re comparing them to Ora when you’re shopping around! They definitely set the bar pretty darn high.
